This Household Alternative Game of the Year Awards for The Past Year
Alright, what did you think of the past year in your household? Did it seem truly wonderful as one might claim on online? Overflowing with top marks for the kids and wild themed fancy dress birthday parties for the parents? Maybe it felt like a ocean of disappointment with only sporadic fun flotsam? Is any of this genuine, or have we all become seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity smiles?
I've assembled the family together, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Release First Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Title Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. I respect that.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Release the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he complains, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can mature and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could eviscerate my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the late night after evening drinks.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I would happily play any time. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Title I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when most games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between business deals that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it burns like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
