The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
