Prolonged Chill Grips Canada as US Records Warmest Christmas on Record.
Northern Canada has been gripped by a severe and lengthy Arctic outbreak, with readings persisting in the minus 20 to minus 40 Celsius range for an extended duration. On Tuesday, Braeburn in the Yukon recorded -55.7C, its coldest December temperature since 1975.
Prolonged Freeze Below -40C
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured over two straight weeks of nights colder than minus 40 degrees, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C earlier this week. The capital, Whitehorse, likewise saw a series of ten nights when temperatures dropped below -30C.
This Arctic air mass pushed further southward through Christmas week. Christmas night saw Edmonton's temperatures plummet below minus 28C.
Boxing Day was expected to bring minimum temperatures of at least minus 20C in numerous areas, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
Expected to Continue Through Early January
The frigid conditions are predicted to linger for the foreseeable future. Officials have warned that the Yukon could face electricity outages soon, as the territory’s power grid comes under strain from record-high energy demand.
The lengthy cold snap originates from the polar vortex remaining anchored over Canada for much of December, which funnels frigid northern air southward. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north slowly, permitting warmer Pacific winds to flow over the US and into parts of southern Canada.
Pronounced Disparity with US Warmth
In stark contrast, parts of the US experienced the hottest December 25th in their history as readings skyrocketed 15 to 30 degrees Celsius above normal. Across wide regions, the atmosphere was more akin to late spring than late December.
Several states set Christmas Day temperature records. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Cities including Austin and Dallas, in Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina were also among those that recorded temperatures above 25C.
Atmospheric Ridge Sustains High Temperatures
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last through Boxing Day and the days ahead, with abnormal warmth projected to move into the south-eastern states later in the week.
This heat is being driven by a powerful high-altitude ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure blanketing a significant part of the landmass, trapping warm air near the surface. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
