The British tennis star earned the most notable victory of his career by rebounding from a set down to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory represents Norrie's maiden win over a current world number one.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the newest English competitor in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to embrace my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my first win over the world No 1 and probably the strongest competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which represented the top run of performances in the young champion's developing professional path.

The top seed looked to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he cruised through the opening set. Yet, Norrie steadily fought his way into the match by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding exchanges. His relentless shot tolerance and dependability gradually took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The young star looked notably struggling hitting his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the game for much of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie presented Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his steadiness, athleticism and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to move forward and strike effectively.
