New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
