Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented High Temperatures Just One Week Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that led to inundation across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with unusually warm conditions for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
On Friday midday, the thermometer reached 91°F (33°C) in the city center, per data from weather officials. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on forecast graphics for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Authorities cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a intense winter storm that pummeled the region last week. That system delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, triggering mudslide risks for countless residents.
Tragically, the storm also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict a cooldown will arrive. Temperatures were predicted to decrease to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that reached the 90-degree mark included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown LA can see weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the start of March.
