Early Sunday, UK rail authorities announced the detainment of two men after a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the 35-year-old was freed with no charges, and police confirmed he had no connection in the attack.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were issued to tackle the spread of misinformation on digital platforms, which had intensified after the deadly attack of young students in a English town last summer.

Yet, advocates have raised concerns that this approach could lead to an excessive focus on the ethnicity of those accused and spark further extremist narratives when information are withheld with the public.

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose district includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but essential for police to swiftly release the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that social media are used to push agendas, making it vital for law enforcement to provide accurate information to counter speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the official disclosure, right-leaning politicians had demanded a faster response. For instance, the shadow home secretary pushed for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public should be informed “without delay”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after police clarified that the arrested individuals were British nationals, some individuals continued to insinuate that information was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, despite police assurances to the opposite.

Guidance Background

The guidance were created by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came soon after a political party accused authorities of concealing the details and immigration status of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.
