We are verifying video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
