American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

More than three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.
