Crew Member Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
