The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
