Among Avatar: The Last Airbender's most beloved installments receives a dedicated Magic: The Gathering special card drop.
Usually, clip shows are disliked by fans as a pointless time filler, or at best accepted as a requirement for series in the era of weekly production. That wasn't always true, though Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it through "The Ember Island Players," a cherished episode during its concluding run that is now receiving a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.
Details about the special release
The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the forthcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced recently. This includes five distinct sets, and even though the one called "My Cabbages!" is an admittedly humorous tribute to Avatar's most famous minor character, the remaining sets appear slightly uninspired, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."
Drawing from episode 17 in the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this special set contains these specific cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
Why this installment is special
Audiences of Avatar clearly recall this episode, which acted as a summary of the hero Aang and the group's quest leading up to the conclusion. In contrast to standard summary installments, or retrospective segments, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated due to production constraints or production issues. The show's makers truly wanted to offer viewers a moment to reflect on the overall plot, yet they chose to approach it inventively.
During the installment, the main characters observe a play inspired by their journeys in a theater located on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, cheesy, and utterly comical. It excels since it plays on the characters' views about themselves, setting them against with how the world (and particularly the Fire Nation) perceives them. It contains an ideal level of introspective humor, and it becomes possibly the best adaptation of the series available to date.

When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this is a great Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card is valued between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces at the time of writing, and for $29.99 you can acquire the full set, or $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender set will be available during early access events on Nov. 14 and debuts internationally on Nov. 21.
