A Account of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Floor
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book a place to stay when I arrived, however when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the night in a place operating all night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for nailing an interview the following day, however, being a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals like that woman.
I must have looked lost since a female student saw me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and right away she offered I could crash on the floor at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided some food: one filled rolls she brought back her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure for the evening.
With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she undertook being a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up study at that university, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish life has returned her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
